Creating SharePoint 2010 Breadcrumbs

You probably noticed SharePoint 2010 has changed their breadcrumb, they now use the 'navigate up' feature, which is useful to advanced users, but mostly overlooked by end users.

You can re-use the MOSS 2007 breadcrumb site map provider, by copying the SiteMapPath from either a 2007 master page or the 2010 default.master.

<asp:SiteMapPath SiteMapProvider="SPContentMapProvider" id="ContentMap" runat="server"/>

The above code snippet will display the 2007 breadcrumb, there still is one issue with this breadcrumb, it looks normal, but its showing pages > default, lets get rid of the extra garbage.

If you change the sitemapprovider to CurrentNavSiteMapProviderNoEncode, this will produce a simple breadcrumb without the trailing pages > default

Final breadcrumb snippet:

If you would like to hide the original 2010 'nagivate up' breadcrumb, add this simple CSS style.

Adding Adobe PDF icon to SharePoint File Association

In order to get the PDF icon to display, rather then the blank document icon, perform these tasks

The following needs to be done on all SharePoint web / app servers.

Downloaded the Adobe PDF icon (Small 17 x 17) http://www.adobe.com/misc/linking.html
Place the icon in the _Layouts/Images Folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\IMAGES
Edit the DOCICON.xml located:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\XML
Scroll to the <ByExtension> and Insert this near the PNG Key
<Mapping Key="pdf" Value="pdficon_small.gif" />
Last step is to perform an IISRESET /Noforce
Repeat these steps on all Web/App Servers

Mapping SharePoint Docs as Network Drives

SharePoint has the ability to map document libraries as network drives. This makes it easier for the end user to adobt document libraries and save them quicker.

In order to SharePoint docs as network drives you need to do the following:

Windows 7

Open My Computer > Click Map Network Drive
Browse to the desired Doc Lib, Copy and Paste the URL, Do not include any trailing pages or folders, you only want the doc lib.
Select Network Letter > Select reconnect at log in > Enter in your Password

Windows XP

Open My Computer > Click Tools > Map network drive
Browse to the desired Doc Lib, Copy and Paste the URL, Do not include any trailing pages or folders, you only want the doc lib.
There is one extra step for windows XP machines, you need to take out the S in httpS, XP can not connect to secure sites. You also need to take out the %20, XP does not understand those characters to represent a space.
Select Network Letter > Select reconnect at log in > Enter in your Password

Migrating Sites to different Site Collections

There are three methods to exporting/backing up a site.

Saving Site as Site Template

Click on site actions / site settings
Save Site as Site template

Click Include Site Content

Browse to Site Gallery
Save .tmp file
New Site Collection
Browse to New Site Gallery
Upload Site Template
Create New Site
Use Custom Site Templates

Using SharePoint Designer

Open Site in SPD
Click Site > Administration > Back Up Site

Click Include Site Archives

New Site Collection
Create New Blank site
Open new Site in SPD
Click Site > Administration > Restore Site
Select the backedup site (.cmp)
Click Restore

Using STSADM CMD

On the SharePoint Server, Open CMD as Administrator
Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Bin
Backup: STSADM -o export -url http://spsite:80/Site -filename c:\export\Site -includeusersecurity
Create new blank site

STSADM -o createweb -url http://newspsite:70/Site1

Restore: STSADM -o import -url http://newspsite:70/Site -filename c:\export\Site.cmp -includeusersecurity

All Three Methods should successfully move/migrate your SharePoint Site.

**TIP**

If your new site uses a different Master Page, you may receive the error FILE NOT FOUND. if so, do these following steps to fix the error

FILE NOT FOUND

Click on the new site that is erroring
Browse to the settings

/_layouts/settings.aspx

Click on Master Page
Click off inherit Master Page and select the current Master Page

Reset all Sites to Current Master Page.

Click Okay

Now the site should be back up.

Afterwards you can go back and switch the Master Page to inherit.

Moving ALL SharePoint 2010 Database to a Storage Area Network

Here is the approach that I took, when moving all my SharePoint 2010 Databases (including admin, config and search), so far so good with my current SharePoint 2010 Farm.

On the server with Central Administration, I stopped the following services.

SharePoint 2010 Administration
SharePoint 2010 Timer
SharePoint 2010 Tracing
SharePoint 2010 User Code Host
SharePoint 2010 VSS Writer
SharePoint Foundation Search V4
World Wide Web Publishing Service
SharePoint Server Search 14
Web Analytics Data Processing Service
Web Analytics Web Service

Then on my MSSQL database, I mounted a new drive using the ISCSI initiator, which created a new storage drive where my new Databases will live.

Next, using SQL Server Management Studio, I detached all my databases one by one.
Then I simply copied ALL the SP databases over to my new drive.
(copy all .MDFs and .LDFs)

On my new drive, I did place the new DBs in a folder structure simliar to my original SQL \\MSSQL\DATA\

Next, using SQL Server Management Studio, I attached all the databases from the new path.

NOTE: Be sure to run management studio AS ADMIN or your SharePoint_Config will attach as Read-Only, which will cause you issues with your farm.

Once all the databases are reattached and running, I rebooted the SharePoint Servers.
I then went back into my server with CA, ran the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, which allowed me to reconnect to the Farm, which I had to supply my existing Farm PassPhrase.
I had to also reconnect the SharePoint Central Administration through the Wizard.

One thing I did notice is that I had to delete my current CA from IIS, because it conflicting with the wizard.
But once the configuration wizard was complete, it reconnected and recreated the CA in IIS.

Thats it, CA came back up, all my web servers were reconnected and life is good.
Be sure to double check your Health Analyzer and your Services on Servers.

Moving SharePoint 2010 Central Admin from Web Server to App Server

I always heard horror stories from moving Central Administration around, but once I gave it my first try... I realized it wasn't even that hard for 2010. Here are the simple steps to perform to move your Central Administration from your Web Server to your App Server.

On the Web Server where CA is currently located

Run the SP configuration wizard
Click Do not disconnect from the server farm
Click Yes, Remove this website from this machine (removes IIS site)
Click OK

Now, on the App Server

Run the SP configuration wizard
Click Do not disconnect from the server farm
Click Use this machine to the CA website
Place same port # :1111
Click Next

Double Check your newly located Central Administration

You may have to re-run the Farm Configuration Wizard

Double Check your Services on each server
Double Check the Shared Service Provider
Double Check your event log for any unforeseen errors.

That's It, Once you successfully moved CA, if you log into your Web Server and launch CA, you will notice it is now pointed to the new App Server.

*NOTED: Best Practice is to Host your Central Administration on your Application Server.

Setting a Fixed Width in SharePoint 2010

This needs to blogged about once again, since it seems to be an ongoing issue with SharePoint skinning.

This post will show how to easily go from the default liquid layout, to a 960px width with auto scrolling.

Step 1. Alter the Body Tag – replace scroll="no” with style="overflow:auto;”

(This will allow the Body to have a scroll bar when needed.)

Step 2. Add the below <div> tag directly after the <body> <form> tags

<div style="width:960px; margin:auto;”>

Step3. Don’t forget to add the closing </div> tag directly after

<SharePoint:DeveloperDashboard runat="server"/> around line 625

Thats it, Save your master page and refresh your SharePoint... you now should have a fixed width

Hiding Quick Launch Nav in SharePoint 2010

I found adding inline styles not only successfully hides the Quick Launch but if you also add a 0px margin, that will compress the left nav placeholder. This will need to be done in the Master page.

locate the following styles

This div class references the ribbon itself, so we are goin to add a div style to display NONE

This div class references the placeholder (navigation column) we will need to compress this and add a div style that will make the left margin a 0 px

after your done your two new tags should look simliar to these below

Thats it... once this is done, check the master page in and you will no longer see the quick launch.

Upgrading to SharePoint 2010

I was going to start typing up an upgrade blog then I stumbled onto this really nice set of articles by Anshul. So instead of re-blogging I will just link to his blog and give him the credit for his work. Enjoy.

Here are the 4 Approaches Anshul took when upgrading from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010.

In-Place Upgrade
The InPlace upgrade is the easiest way to upgrade from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010. In this approach you will install SharePoint 2010 on the same machine where MOSS 2007 was installed and the Upgrade wizard will upgrade MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010.

Database Attach Upgrade
In database attach approach you install the SharePoint Server 2010 on a fresh Machine and you upgrade all the sites from your MOSS 2007 server by detaching the Content databases from MOSS Server and attaching them to the SharePoint 2010 server.

Hybrid Approach 1
In this approach you can make the databases of your MOSS 2007 farm read only and then Install SharePoint 2010 on a different machine. Upgrade your MOSS 2007 farm using the Database Attach approach. (On the new SharePoint 2010 farm) and the redirect your users to the new upgraded farm. This will allow you to give read only access to the users while the farm is being upgraded so it will help you in downtime mitigation.

Hybrid Approach 2
In this approach you can detach your content databases and then do an In-Place upgrade once that is done you can attach the databases using the Database Attach approach. The benefit of this approach is that you can have the speed of the DB Attach upgrade and you can also keep your farm wide settings as you are upgrading the farm by using the In-Place upgrade.

Displaying a Holiday or Monthly Event in a Web Part

I created several custom lists that display a specific Holiday, Pay Dates, Birthday, Etc...
I now want this list to display as a web part and only display the "current month" activities. After trying a few methods, I stumbled upon this calculated column to solve my issue.

First I created all the custom columns, including a Date Column (DateDisplay).
Then I created a Calculated (calculation based on other columns) Column
Named it ItemDisplay
- Made it a Content Type
- Inserted the following formula:
Next I added the web part, edited the current view
Place a filter on it so it shows only Items, "ItemDisplay" is Equal to 1

What the calculated value means
=IF the current Month of (Today) EQUALS the Month of (DateDisplay)
Then set the value to 1, if not then set it to 0
The Web Part filter will then display only items Equal to 1

EDITED: I haven't been able to make this process automated, but at the beginning of each month, I just edit the current months items, don't make any changes, just save the item and the formula will kick in and display the month as a 1. Hope this makes sense.

Simple CRM Priority Dropdown to change Due Date

This next situation I ran into, called for a Due Date field and a Ticket Priority Pick List, they requested that when a technician comes into the ticket and changes the priority status it will automatically update the Due Date. The Due Date is auto-populated with a Normal priority, so the Due Date will be 7 Days after Todays date, This will be pushed forward or back depending on the priority status selected.

For Example If I selected :
High priority will change the Due Date to Todays Date.
Normal priority will push the Due Date back 7 days from Today.
Low priority will push the Due Date back 14 days from Today.
Standby priority will push the Due Date back 30 days from Today.

So, How'd I do this?
I created two fields in CRM 4.0
One is called datedue, which is a basic date field
The second is a Priority picklist with the following types:

Low
Medium
High
Standby

Open up the Main Form
Change properties on the Priority Field
Click Events Tab
Edit onChange
Check that the Event is enabled
Paste the following code:

First create your two entities and relate them together.

On the main form, create an iframe section
Create a new IFRAME, place it in the section

Now there are two things we need to edit here (items in bold).
First one is var navId=

This needs to be the related entity, but we want the navId, not the URL.
Easy way to find this ID, is to use IE Developer Tools.

Open your main form
Click Tool > Developer Tools
Within Developer Tools, Click the ARROW (Select Element by Click)
Now go back to your main form and click the related entity under details

A New window will appear in Developer Tools, It should have highlighted the CRM Nav Subarea.
Locate the ID=

Next Change is the crmForm.all.IFRAME_Items.src

Make sure to use your proper iframe ID (Iframe_Items)

That should be it, Save and Close.
Publish your entity and make sure the related entity is displaying properly

Proper path to upgrade your SharePoint 2007 to SP2

Below are the steps and links to upgrade SharePoint 2007 to SP2, properly. You must perform these upgrades before you migrate to SharePoint 2010.

1.Download the WSS 3.0 SP1 from the below link

SharePoint Users : Last Name Change

This has come up twice now, So I figured I would address this for any future situations... But I received a call this morning, that a user changed her last name. Simple, I first figured, it was updated in Active Directory, so once the SPuser sync occurs everything should be updated... right?

Not so right... I noticed this did not update properly, the account name was updated as well as the Name field. But the email, Last name, and User Name still showed the old last name.

My next step was to delete the user out of the SharePoint group and re add the user. Well same result, right account name, wrong username...

I figured there now has to be a way to delete a single user from the entire site collection then re add them back in as a brand new user, I clicked on the user, and it took me to their mysite, then I clicked on "View User Info" and it took me User Information, where I could edit the user or Delete User from Site Collection. Instead of manually editing the user, I went ahead and deleted them the site collection. Then once I re added them to the SharePoint group, it went out and pulled the new users from AD along with all the updated fields.

I found this odd because one would think this should be an automatic syncing feature, but apparently not.

If anyone has encountered this and AD automatically updated the user in SharePoint, give me a shout.

SharePoint 2010 Master Page Ribbon Hide

Tried a few techniques this one suits me best...

Set the in-line style for both the id="s4-statusbarcontainer" and id="s4-ribbonrow" div's to style="display:none". Then somewhere appropriate below both elements in the master page insert the following:

Often times when building custom web parts or hanging third party web parts, error may occur or sometimes a script error is thrown. Well how do I edit the web part page and delete the erroring web part? Certain cases, you don't even have access to site actions... so what do you do?

Simple work around... add ?contents=1 at the end of whatever page you need to delete the buggy web part from.

InfoPath forms redirects in SharePoint after submission

After creating several infopath forms... I needed a method to redirect the users back to the sharepoint homepage rather then sending them to the allitems page. In certain situations, you may only want an admin or supervisor to view the List items, not normal users. So I discovered this url method

Hiding Calendar start times

Back to MOSS 2007. I was tasked to hide the starting times within the multiple calendar views. So I instantly thought, its CSS styling time... and this is what I came up with.

Within the calendar page, I added a new content editor web part and made it a hidden webpart. I then went into the source editor and added these lines of code.

This will override the core.css styles and hide the starting times when viewing a weekly, daily, and monthly calendar. This will allow the events to sort vertically and not stretch the date by sorting horizontally.

Publishing Portal minus the Approval Workflow

After installing a SharePoint 2010 Publishing Enterprise Portal, I noticed the publishing is now two parts, it includes an out of the box approval workflow. This is good if you need a two step workflow attached. However, most small companies do not need a content approval process... so how do we get around this?

Its a manually process, but I found out if you go through each library and do the following steps

Site Actions > Edit Page > Click Page Tab > Library Settings > Versioning Settings

Then set "Require content approval for submitted items" to NO

You will have to go through each library and switch this settings to NO.
(even picture and document libraries are defaults to content approval)

After doing this, you now can simply click publish and your content is LIVE.

Files in SharePoint 2010 Save Dialog

The first time I setup a SharePoint 2010 instance, I noticed that the document libraries were only allowing users to save a local copy to their hard drive before opening the file. After doing some research I found out that this is a new tightened security added in from Microsoft.

In order to get around this feature, simply log into central admin and click on the current web application.

Then click General Settings and change "Browser File Handling" from Strict (default) to Permissive.

Here is the default info under General Settings
Browser File Handling
Specifies whether additional security headers are added to documents served to web browsers. These headers specify that a browser should show a download prompt for certain types of files (for example, .html) and to use the server's specified MIME type for other types of files.

Permissive Specifies no headers are added, which provides a more compatible user experience.

Strict Adds headers that force the browser to download certain types of files. The forced download improves security for the server by disallowing the automatic execution of Web content that contributors upload.

I am turning this blog into my own personal tricks section, I am constantly searching the web for tricks on sharepoint, when I find them I usually bookmark the site, well I have been noticing I got alot of bookmarks! So I have been thinking about a way to utilize my blog but give myself a reason to keep blogging, what I came up with is each time I find a tip or trick that worked for me, I will blog it and give the website credit. I figured if you come across my blog in a search engine and are able to use these tips or tricks, then maybe this blog is worth writing and keeping alive.

Lets see how this works out.

Some great links I would like to share, These webcasts have helped me greatly in my domination over SharePoint, a lot of Technics I have discovered came from reading many SharePoint blogs, I have listed a few favorites below.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) is only growing, and Microsoft has seen what companies are doing with MOSS, so it will only get better. Along with the name change, Microsoft SharePoint 2010 will pull out all the stops, they are introducing several Microsoft technologies into SharePoint 2010; Business Intelligence, Performance Point, Groove... just to name a few... SharePoint 2010 will also have a slightly new look to match the MSOffice 07 Roll out. They will introduce the Ribbon and add Silver Light interaction web parts. Microsoft is planning on announcing all the features and will be providing a demo at the SharePoint Conference 09, which is in Las Vegas, NV in October. I will be viewing all the online webcasts during this event, so I will keep you posted.

Android Update - Cupcake - 5/28/09

Okay Google Phone Owners, Cupcake was just officially released today! So if you own the Google G1, go update it... its well worth the troubles and its not even a difficult update.

Directions taken from androidcentral.com

-Download the Android 1.5 Cupcake US Version File
-Rename Downloaded zip file to update.zip
-Copy 'update.zip' to SD Card
-Turn off the phone. Press and hold HOME+POWER to reboot
-When you see the triangle with an exclamation point press ALT+L
-Press ALT+S to begin update process
-When prompted, Press HOME+BACK to reboot
-It may reboot a few times, don't worry

Thats it... your updated to version 1.5. Now go ahead and enjoy all the new features:

The Twitter Buzz - 5/18/09

It's been a while since I last blogged, I'm working on getting myself healthy once again, its been sort of a struggle, but things are looking up... hope some new laws are passed to make my life a lot easier :)

Today, lets talk about Buzz words... what have you been hearing a lot of lately? I'm sure a couple words come to mind, but to me... its mainly social networking and the big one Twitter. Every magazine I pick up now about technology, Twitter has a large article or its on the front cover. It is definitely the 2009 tech trend and is only growing. Twitter has now had over 4 offers (ranging in the 100+ millions) to buy them out but they are holding strong and refusing to negotiate with any of these mainstream buyers.

Twitter has become so successful and mainstream because it has an open API (application programming interface) which means any programmer can tap into the code and create his/her own twitter application. The beauty of it is its all FREE and only growing. There are 100 plus tweet applications out there to make your tweeting experience more enjoyable. At first everyone hates on twitter, what's twitter? why would I care when your brushing your teeth or eating a sandwich? But then after a while, you get it... twitter actually starts making sense and you gear your tweets to your targeted audience.

Twitter is more than a personal geeky "what are you doing" type of networking, it also provides very valuable and up to date information. Its live feeds from live people, so how ever you choose to use your twitter is up to you. It ranges from Government Updates, State Announcements, Mac/Windows User Tips, Car Industry deals, or even local Road Closures, anything and everything is posted on twitter, its whether or not your following the right people, you just need to embrace it and become involved in the world of micro blogging.

Windows 7 Beta Tested - 4/4/09

I have been recently beta testing the new Windows 7, Its much much much better than Vista, thats for sure, its more directed towards newbs, which is good, it finally has alot of the features you been looking for.

Some new features I like are:
Finally able to rearrange the open items in your taskbar, they use icons now instead of a title, which is nice for more real estate, but I think the area around the icon could be even smaller. I originally thought 7 took the docking station from Apple, but I was mistaken, you can pin things to the taskbar and the taskbar functions are alot better, you can right click and open recent items or if you have more than one window open you can click and choose which tab or file to jump to.

The background is nice, it changes automatically. I like the show desktop button beside the systray, its useful, The start menu and control panel are more user friendly, its mostly text based which is fine with me. They used text for the start menus power options, which I think is a big improvement. The Breadcrumb feature in explorer is nice. Oh yea, real sweet feature is if you drag a window to the top, right, or left side of the screen it maximizes the window.

I do think they just went back through Vista and focused on the details, and it made it more user friendly, all the things you thought to yourself "why wouldn't they just have done this," I have been noticing alot of small things that I been saying to myself "Finally"!

Did You Get Tricked?

While the potentially dangerous Conficker worm was being tracked throughout April Fools' Day, more harmless hoaxes were being fired out across the Internet.

New media mockery was everywhere.

Google unveiled "Gmail Autopilot." It alleges that it will help you weed through your inbox by replying to e-mails with automated responses, tailored to your preference for emoticons.

Google also claimed to have mastered artificial intelligence with an entity named "CADIE." That technology led Google to claim, among other things, that it could now "index your brain."

The 188-year-old British newspaper The Guardian said it would become a "Twitter-only publication," limiting its reports to 140 characters or less.

One example from 1927 read: "OMG first successful trans-Atlantic air flight wow, pretty cool!"

(The North Carolina alternative weekly Mountain Express announced a similar reconfiguration, calling itself "the nation's first Twaper.")

Yahoo created a new "Ideological Search" that filters results to fit your personal beliefs. On it, you can get either Republican or Democratic results to a query like "stimulus package."

A startup called Monetate launched a spoof of the photo-sharing site Flickr. With "smellr," the site claims it has brought scent to social networking: "It's like Flickr, but for your nose."

YouTube offered its latest innovation in online video: upside-down viewing. To experience it, YouTube suggests turning your monitor upside down and tilting your head - or moving to Australia.

The online marketplace Amazon.com announced that it had brought cloud computing to the skies. Though "cloud computing" is simply a metaphor for a kind of interconnected computing, Amazon said it had used "the latest in airship technology" to put computers in the clouds (with blimps).

Microsoft's Xbox unveiled a mock version of the popular video game Guitar Hero: "Alpine Legend." This version is for yodeling, rather than guitar playing.

On Facebook, various applications posted joke alerts like "Barack Obama confirmed you as a cousin."

The blog for How Stuff Works explained Willy Wonka-like inventions - like rechargeable gum and "permanent kittens."

Perhaps the most dizzying April Fools' mock-reality came from Wikipedia, which annually redesigns its home page with spoof articles and headlines. The user-generated encyclopedia was even more unreliable than usual on Wednesday. Its feature article was on "the Museum of Bad Art" or "MOBA."

Earth Hour is Coming Soon - 3/25/09

More than 2,000 cities around world expected to participate in rolling event.

Lights are scheduled to go out at hundreds of popular tourist landmarks and buildings worldwide, including New York, London, Paris, Dubai, Hong Kong, Moscow and Nairobi.

Organized by the World Wildlife Fund and supported by a host of powerful names.

The rolling electric turnoff will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time on March 28, beginning in Fiji and following time zones around the globe.

I been searching for a good Remote Desktop program and I think I found the best VNC viewer for across the web, Thanks to Dawson. Check out Teamviewer, its free!, it does Secure VPN, File Transfer, Remote Desktop all via an app or the browser. Definitely a must have for any IT pro. The added partner list is great so you don't even have to remember the session IDs. Its Free and contains zero spyware, the only thing is a Thank You message when you exit the session. Next, go download the new safari browser, Thanks Gene, it is Apple controlled, so beware! :) but it has a really nice "itunes" esk interface and i love the way it displays your top sites, its almost a mix between googles chrome and IE 8. The top sites are also live so they are constantly updating. It also indexes extremely fast, so the loading time is cut down. Its about time Apple got back in the game of browsing. Sharepoint/Windows 7 Beta - 1/16/09

I just signed up for End User SharePoint Tips, Looking forward to see what they have to offer. I have been working on misc. web parts, some are usable, but some are customized towards Dauphin County.

Also just got a copy of Windows 7 Beta, I am excited to see what has been updated. I hear its a lot quicker and it uses the memory resource a lot nicer. I will most likely install it on a VM, I will update.

I will soon begin developing Robert A. Marshall's Website, the designs are in and ready to go.

Google G1 Tips and Tricks - 1/6/09

G1 has a few shortcuts I have discovered, here are a few:
-Long Press Home Key to display the last 6 apps recently used
-Long Press Dial Key to activate Voice Dialer
-Long Press Hangup Key to select Power off or Silent Mode
-Menu Key is equal to Ctrl key on windows keyboard; Menu+A (select all); Menu+C (copy); Menu+P (paste); etc...
-Alt+Scroll Ball is home and end key (jump to start position)
-Shift(Up Arrow)+Scroll Ball highlights text

G1 Google Phone - 1/3/09

So I got the Google Phone when it came out in November, I gave it a few months before I blogged about it just so I can check out the new apps.

Starting at the end of this month (January) G1 apps developers will be able to charge for their apps, I feel once this happens, we will truly be able to see the real potential Android has.

So far so good, I have to admit, some of the free apps are nice and useful and we are already seeing some iPhone Apps coming in. Also using the G1 made me a firm Google believer, I now use Gmail, Blogger, Picasa3, Chrome, etc...

A few MUST HAVE G1 Apps:
ExactCallLog, The Schwartz Sabre, Scoreboard, Gmote 2.0, Twitli, Hello Aim, Bubble (of course, everyone needs a leveler), Woot Checker, Shop Savvy, Jetcet PDF, Text-to-speech library, SMS Popup, Myspace, Facebook, Missed Call, DGalert, Cowbell!, Barcode Scanner, Spell Dial

Sharepoint - Permission Groups - 12/1/08

I have been asked a few times what is the best way to set permission. Here is what I have discovered. Remember to use proper permissions when creating sub sites, lists, or libraries. The easiest way would be to let your Server Manager take care of your groups through Active Directory, which already should be created for email and network permissions. SharePoint will sync with single-sign on and access those groups. There are times when I want to create a quick custom group, then I'll create those groups within SharePoint, but for the most part, I only use AD groups.

Always use groups though, if you use single user permissions, in the long run you will regret it. If the user leaves or switches responsibilities, you only have to switch out users in the groups, not each individual permission you set. Groups are easier to keep organized and will save you a lot of time in the future.

One more thing, when creating target audiences, you can ONLY use SharePoint groups, AD groups won't work unless you install this hot fix from Microsoft.

Paging Through Document Libraries - 12/1/08

Do you ever get annoyed with out of control Document Libraries, well I do. Here is a quick tip for content editor web parts or any document library hyperlink.

If you highlight the text and click hyperlink, then click browse, the webpage dialog only displays 15 items per page for in the current document library, who wants to page thru to the end to find the most recent file uploaded. Well if you click on the modified handle and select the most recent date in the dropdown, it will narrow down your search and your paging.

This is the most efficient way to locate the file you want hyper linked. Enjoy Microsoft SharePoint.

Adobe CS4 - 11/21/08

Sat through a CS4 demo and the new features were extremely impressive. InDesign finally has a Preflight Option that monitors the formatting and spacing. Photoshop now has a ton of pre-made workspaces, found out the animation (image ready) is only available in photoshop extended. Photoshop also now has a full section on non-destructive imaging... there is a new workspace for adjustments that now adjusts the image using vector mask, so at anytime you can delete that vector mask and not ruin the intial image. (contrast, level, brightness, etc) But if you use the original file menu image > adjustments... it will be the old way and destruct the image. Also a great feature in Photoshop CS4 is the tabbed imaging... just like in dreamweaver, photoshop now has tabs for multiple images opened in photoshop.

I will keep ya up to date on the new features as I discover them myself.

I just participated in a SharePoint Teleforum, which consisted of 77 people from all the Country (including Canada). The teleforum was very informative and it seems like most businesses are still fairly new to SharePoint. I think SharePoint is the perfect solutions for any small business looking for content management. Depending on the size of the department, SharePoint could easily become your document management as well.
